Moving ideas forward to improve outcomes

The goal of the cBPI initiative is to improve healthcare outcomes by increasing adherence to evidence-based clinical practice. Our Intermountain approach results in faster adoption of best practices because it:

  • Treats implementation as a major undertaking in its own right
  • Incorporates systematic prioritization
  • Measures adherence and focuses on adherence metrics
  • Develops and uses technology that supports caregivers to make it easier to follow best practices
  • Leverages the Intermountain Operating Model

Implementations to Date
Clinical Best Practice Integration consultants partner with clinical teams to turn ideas into evidence-based best practices to improve patient care. Here are a few examples of implementations that have happened so far:

  • Acute Stroke in Emergency Departments
Driving high adherence to administration of TPA within 60 minutes of ED arrival will result in earlier engagement of the tele-stroke team, less disability, and shorter length of stay.
  • Pediatric Minor Head Trauma in Emergency Departments
Driving high adherence to the avoidance of head CT scans for patients presenting to the ED with a very low risk of cTBI will reduce unnecessary CT scans and attendant risk of CT-induced malignancy.
  • Low Tidal Volume Ventilation in Intensive Care Units
Driving high adherence to tidal volume ≤6.5ml/KBW will result in reduced lung injury, mortality.

Intermountain Health’s unique term for implementation science, Care Delivery Science emphasizes the overarching mission of evidence-based medicine – helping patients back to better health.

Our team includes applied health services researchers, implementation scientists, and evaluation experts so that we can improve the quality and reliability of care.

The Healthcare Delivery Institute hosts second-year Fellows enrolled in the prestigious Stanford/Intermountain Fellowship in Population Health, Delivery Science, and Primary Care. Co-directed by Dr. Srivastava, Intermountain's Chief Clinical Programs Officer, this intensive two-year fellowship offers participants a comprehensive experience. Fellows earn a master’s degree in health services research from Stanford University, receive tuition for the Advanced Training Program (ATP), and gain invaluable hands-on experience in implementation science and mentorship within the HDI.

Overview:
The two-year program includes tuition support for a master’s degree in health services research that gives fellows a basic understanding of epidemiology, study design, cost effectiveness, health policy, implementation science and other disciplines needed for a successful research or program development career. Fellows will also be exposed to key health delivery concepts including Lean healthcare design, the Patient Centered Medical Home, longitudinal population outcomes tracking, and change management. Each Fellow will assemble a formal mentorship team from world class faculty at both institutions to help him or her develop a project from conception to completion and publication. The program will also provide each fellow with $50K to support their research efforts and prepare them for a successful independent career. Clinical responsibilities will be minimal (1/2 day per week) to ensure ample time to develop these skills.
