Where we train

Intermountain Health is Utah’s largest healthcare system. Intermountain Medical Center, the system’s flagship hospital, provides state-of-the-art tertiary care and operates as a Level 1 Trauma Center. The medical campus features the state’s busiest Emergency Department, with over 80,000 patient visits per year, multiple specialty intensive care units, and a full range of ambulatory clinics.
Our fellows also rotate at Primary Children’s Hospital, where they are expected to attend post-transplant appointments, inpatient surgical rounds, surgical evaluations, and surgical cases on a weekly basis.

Intermountain Health transplant program

The Intermountain Health Transplant Program is the most comprehensive adult and pediatric abdominal thoracic and bone marrow transplant program and has Utah's largest organ donor allocation program. Our multidisciplinary care, innovative leadership, and nationally recognized outcomes make our program a pioneer in transplantation. Since 1986, we have performed more than 3,000 kidney transplants with 1,200 living donors and have a 93% survival rate for the first year. By improving our skills to accept all types of organs, we have wait times two months shorter than national averages.

We truly embrace the phrase “work hard, play hard.” With an average of 300 days of sunshine a year in Utah, there is ample opportunity to enjoy the outdoors outside of clinical responsibilities. The illustrious Utah mountains are a haven for hiking, biking, fishing, climbing, skiing, and snowboarding. Numerous ski resorts are within an hour from Salt Lake and are popular weekend destinations for the adventure bound.

Additionally, there is always something to do in the city. Intermountain Medical Center is uniquely situated near downtown Salt Lake, where there are a vast variety of restaurants, cafes, breweries, and more. When fellows are not in the hospital, there are myriad opportunities to enjoy the arts, culture, food, and other unique experiences that the city has to offer:

  • Peruse the offerings at one of our renowned museums (The Leonardo Museum, Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Art, Fort Douglas Military Museum, Hellenic Cultural Museum, Discovery Gateway).
  • Catch a game at the Delta Center where the Utah Jazz and Utah Hockey Club play or see the Salt Lake Bees.
  • Explore all the national parks Utah offers (Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, Moab, Capital Reef, Canyonlands, etc.)
  • See your favorite bands perform at both intimate and large concert venues (Delta Center, USANA amphitheater, The Depot, or the Complex)
  • Take the family to the Hogle Zoo or Living Planet Aquarium.
Intermountain Health has a long history of dedication to the medically underserved and strives to expand opportunities for underrepresented individuals pursuing a career in surgery. This involves creating a culture of inclusion and recruitment efforts to expand our diversity to support the community and program.
